Long Key State Park

Did you know?

Long Key appears on the Spanish charts as Cayo Vivora (Rattlesnake Key). The name probably refers to the shape of the island, which resembles the open jaws of an angry snake since rattlesnakes are certainly not common here. Long Key was an important depot during the operation of the railroad because of the Long Key Fishing Camp, one of Henry Flagler's own projects. All was destroyed during the 1935 hurricane.

The developed central portion of the Key incorporated in 1962 as the town of Layton. Zane Grey, author of nearly fifty novels, fished these waters for many years. A salt water creek leading to Long Key Bight has been named for him.

Long Key State Park is a 965 acre Florida State Park located on Long Key, one of the Florida Keys, at mile marker 67.5 on U.S. Route 1, 67400 Overseas Highway. To access a list of wildlife and plants, this site is very helpful
