Did you know?
Lower Matecumbe appears on the Spanish charts as "Matecumbe lo Viejo" (Old Matecumbe). The coast fronting Hawk Channel is rocky, and coral gardens occur just a mile offshore. Freshwater wells near the northeastern corner of the island (actually catchment basins for rainwater) were used by Indians, explorers, pirates, and fishermen, until they were filled in by the railroad work gangs.
Between Upper and Lower Matecumbe are two state Parks. Lignum Vitae Key is a State Botanical Site and Indian Key is a State Historical Site. For information on visiting either go to Upper Matecumbe or Good Things and Helpful Tips.
