Did you know?

Plantation Key had no name of its own on the old Spanish charts but was treated as a part of Key largo. It's modern name recalls the agricultural period at the turn of the centruy, when most of the high ground was cleared and planted to pineapples, limes, tomatoes, and other crops sold to Key West, Miami, and northern markets. The physical size of the island increased when the railroad crews filled in the water gap between it and the Key(then known as Snake Creek Key) to the southwest.

Among the important buildings on Plantation Key are Coral Shores High School, the Monroe county Sherrif's substation, and Mariner's Hospital just to the north.
