Did you know?
To the first settlers the two original portions of the Key were know as the Umbrella Keys and the name Windley was not used until the railroad days. Both of the Umbrellss were occupied by homesteaders before 1900 and parts of them were productive farmlands. The railroad joined the two portions of the Keys with a fill, and established a station named Quarry on the westernmost. In addition to establishing a rock pit today known as the Windley Key Quarry, the railroad dug stone from pits to the east of Rt. 1. These excavations have since been flooded with seawater and stocked with marine life to create the popular tourist attraction know as Theater of the Sea. Enjoy the rum runners at the Tiki Bar at Holiday Isle and you can join the crowd at the sandbar in your boat!
