Did you know?

Tavernier is the unincorporated community near the south end of Key Largo and the north end of Plantation Key. The name is probably a corruption of the Spanish term that appears on the old charts of Cayo Babona, or Horsefly Key, given to the small island on the seward side of Tavernier Harbor. The anchorage insde Tavernier harbor is protected from almost all points of the compass, was well known to the Bahamian sealers, pirates, turtlers, and wreckers of the 18th century.

Harry Harris County Park

It has a little something for everyone, from ballplayers (baseball fields, basketball courts) to boaters (two boat ramps, which are the best landings between Miami and Key West) to beachgoers (an enclosed tidal pool that's about as wide as a football field).  There's also a large picnic area and children's playground. Wilkinson's Point is an interesting coral outcrop that extends about 100 yards into the water. On the north side, you can wander into the three-foot shallows of Florida Bay (wear shoes). It is well-guarded fact that this is one of the best bonefishing areas around, and you don't even have to be in a boat to take advantage of it.
